Akagera is not flat. Its western edge is a chain of hills that rise to more than 1,800 metres, and the Mutumba range in the north gives you the single best overview of what the park actually is: a strip of savannah and hill country pressed against a chain of lakes and the Akagera River, with Tanzania on the far bank.
The drive up is a highlight in itself, climbing through open grassland where topi like to stand sentinel on old termite mounds. At the top there is a simple public campsite — no water, no power, just a clearing, a long horizon and complete silence after dark.
For photographers this is where an Akagera trip earns its keep. Sunrise from the ridge with mist sitting on the lakes below, or sunset with the plains turning gold and the hills going purple, is a genuinely world-class view.
Top things to do at Mutumba Hills
Camp on the ridge
Mutumba is one of Akagera’s three public campsites. It is basic — bring everything, including water — but waking up on the escarpment with hyena calls still in your ears is a memory that outlasts any lodge.
Photograph sunrise over the lakes
From the high points you look east across the plain to the lake chain and the Akagera River. Get up before dawn; the mist and the first light are gone within half an hour.
Scan for game from above
A raised vantage over open grassland is a rare gift on safari. Set up binoculars and spend twenty minutes methodically sweeping the plain — herds and even lions are often visible from here.
Look for hill specialists
The rocky slopes hold klipspringer and, in the bush along the tracks, bushbuck and duiker. Raptors ride the thermals along the ridge through the middle of the day.
How to get to Mutumba Hills
- The hills sit in the park’s northern sector, most easily reached via the northern Mutumba gate.
- From the southern gate, allow the best part of a driving day with game viewing along the way — this is a two-day itinerary, not a day trip.
- Camping must be arranged in advance through park reception or your tour operator; you cannot simply turn up.
- The campsite has no water supply. Carry everything you need, including drinking, cooking and washing water.
- Nights at altitude get cold. A proper sleeping bag makes the difference between a great night and a long one.
- Keep food sealed and inside vehicles — the campsites are unfenced and hyenas patrol them.
- If camping is not for you, book a night at one of the northern lodges instead and drive up for sunrise.
