Akagera National Park safaris & tickets

Compare every game drive, boat safari and multi-day trip in one place — with live GetYourGuide prices and free cancellation on most options.

There are really only four ways to experience Akagera: a game drive, a boat safari on Lake Ihema, a night drive, or a balloon flight over the savannah at dawn. Everything else is a question of how many of those you combine, how long you stay, and how comfortably you sleep.

Almost every visitor arrives on an organised trip from Kigali, and for good reason — the park is 110 km away, you need a high-clearance 4x4 inside it, and park fees plus a guide add up whether you drive yourself or not. A packaged safari usually works out simpler and, for one or two people, cheaper.

Below you will find the full catalogue of Akagera experiences bookable online, from a US$180 shared day trip to a multi-day private itinerary, plus a plain-English breakdown of what the park actually costs.

  • Hot lunch served at a picnic site inside the park

A hot air balloon drifting over the African savannah at sunrise Scenic flight from $360
🕑 Approx. 4 hours (flight around 1 hour) 📍 From Akagera park-area hotels

Akagera National Park: Hot Air Balloon Flight with Breakfast

The single most memorable thing you can do in Akagera. You lift off at first light, drift silently over the grasslands and the lake chain while the sun comes up over Tanzania, and watch the herds move underneath you — a perspective no game drive gives you. Landing is followed by a full bush breakfast and the traditional celebration. Book it early: flights are weather-dependent and capacity is small.

  • Bush breakfast after landing
  • Hotel transfers from accommodation in the park area

Akagera 1-Day Safari with Boat Cruise & Park Fees Included

Akagera’s park fees are significant and many day tours quote them separately, so a package that bundles entry, a game drive and the Lake Ihema boat safari into one price is genuinely useful. This one does exactly that. You get the classic southern-sector drive plus an hour on the water among the hippo pods, with nothing left to pay at the gate.

  • Park entry fees included — no surprise costs at the gate
  • Game drive plus a Lake Ihema boat safari in one day
  • Hippos, Nile crocodiles and superb waterbird viewing

2-Day Akagera Big Five Safari with Hilltop Camping

The cheapest realistic way to reach Akagera’s northern plains, which is where the lions and the biggest herds are. You game drive up through the park on day one, camp on the high ground with a fire and an enormous night sky, and are out on the plains again at first light — the single most productive game-viewing hour of any Akagera itinerary. Basic, brilliant and very well reviewed.

  • Two full days of game driving, including the northern plains
  • Camping on the park’s highest ground with bushfire and stargazing
  • Big Five, plus 500+ recorded bird species

2-Day Akagera Game Drive & Boat Safari with Resort Stay

The comfortable version of the two-day Akagera trip. You cover the same ground — southern lakes, central woodland and as far north as time allows — but sleep in a proper room with a pool and a restaurant instead of a tent. 2-Day Akagera Wildlife Safari with Night Game Drive

Night drives are the most underrated activity in Akagera, and this is the cleanest way to build one into a trip. After a full day in the park you head out again after dark with a park guide and spotlights, looking for the nocturnal species that a day itinerary never shows you: spotted hyena, serval, genet, white-tailed mongoose and bushbabies, with leopard as the prize. The Lake Ihema boat safari is included too.

  • Guided night game drive with spotlights
  • Hyena, serval, genet, bushbaby and — with luck — leopard
  • Lake Ihema boat safari and a full day of game driving

A giraffe browsing on acacia in Akagera National Park, Rwanda Photography safari from $420

Akagera Wildlife Photography Safari: Big Five & Boat Cruise

A standard safari gets you to the animals; a photography safari gets you to the animals with the sun in the right place and enough time to work the scene. This trip combines a Big Five game drive with a Lake Ihema boat cruise — the best low-angle wildlife photography in the park — and is structured around the golden hours. Bring your longest lens and a beanbag or clamp for the vehicle.

  • Itinerary built around light, not just sightings
  • Big Five game drive plus a Lake Ihema boat cruise

Kigali: Luxury Akagera Day Trip with Private Game Drive & Boat

The private, unhurried version of an Akagera day. Because the vehicle is yours, you set the pace: linger at a lion sighting, chase the light for photographs, stop when you want to. A gourmet picnic replaces the standard lunch box, and the Lake Ihema boat safari rounds off the afternoon. Expensive for one day, but genuinely a different experience from a shared trip.

From Kigali: 2-Day Akagera Safari with Lake Ihema Boat Cruise

A two-day itinerary that gives equal weight to the land and the water. You cruise Lake Ihema for hippos, crocodiles and fish eagles, game drive through the savannah for the Big Five, and get a proper explanation of how a park that lost its lions in the 1990s became a fenced Big Five reserve again — which is, arguably, the most interesting thing about Akagera.

  • Game drives across the southern and northern sectors

Note that gorilla permits are a substantial separate cost set by the government — check carefully what the listed price includes before booking.

From Kigali: Private Scenic Helicopter Tour over Rwanda

Rwanda is called the land of a thousand hills, and nothing explains that phrase like seeing it from the air. Private scenic flights from Kigali take in the terraced hillsides, the volcano chain, Lake Kivu and the national parks, and can double as a transfer — an Akagera flight cuts a 2.5-hour drive down to about 25 minutes. Expensive, and unforgettable.

  • Private helicopter with panoramic windows

From Kigali: 4-Day Akagera Savannah & Nyungwe Chimpanzees

Rwanda packs an extraordinary range into a country the size of Wales: dry eastern savannah on one side, ancient Albertine Rift rainforest on the other. This four-day trip does both — Big Five game drives and a boat cruise in Akagera, then chimpanzee tracking and the suspended canopy walkway in Nyungwe. A long drive between the two, but a genuinely complete picture of the country.

How to choose the right Akagera safari

One day or two?

A single day covers the southern sector well and usually includes the Lake Ihema boat safari, but it rarely reaches the northern plains where the lions are. If seeing lions matters to you, book two days. It is the single biggest difference between a good Akagera trip and a great one.

Shared or private?

Shared day trips are excellent value and perfectly comfortable. A private vehicle costs two to three times more but lets you set the pace, wait at a sighting for the light, and skip the compromises that come with a full car. Photographers should always go private.

Is the boat safari worth it?

Yes. An hour on Lake Ihema among hippo pods, crocodiles and fish eagles is the highlight of the park for many visitors, and it shows you a habitat a game drive never reaches. Check whether the boat fee is bundled into your tour price or paid separately at reception.

What about a night drive?

Night drives leave after dark with a park guide and spotlights, and are the only way to see hyena, serval, genet and bushbabies. They can only be booked if you are staying inside or immediately beside the park, so they have to be planned into a multi-day itinerary.

Are park fees included?

This is the most common source of surprise costs. Some tours quote a price that includes park entry, some do not. Always read the inclusions carefully — at around US$100 per person per day, entry is the largest single line in an Akagera budget.

Do I need a park guide?

Not legally, if you are on an organised tour with a licensed operator. But hiring an additional park guide for the vehicle costs relatively little, and they share radio updates on lion and rhino locations with the other guides. It measurably improves what you see.

What Akagera actually costs

Akagera is not a cheap park, and the headline tour price is rarely the whole story. The figures below are indicative and change from season to season — always check the official Rwanda Development Board and African Parks rates before you finalise a budget, and confirm exactly what your operator includes.

Park entry (non-resident international) ≈ US$100 / person / day Lower rates apply for East African residents and Rwandan nationals; rates vary by season.
Lake Ihema boat safari (scheduled) ≈ US$45–55 / person Booked at park reception. Private charters cost considerably more.
Night game drive ≈ US$50 / person Requires an overnight stay inside or beside the park.
Park guide for your vehicle ≈ US$40 / day Per vehicle, not per person. Strongly recommended.
Organised day trip from Kigali US$180–400 / person Transport, driver-guide and usually lunch. Check whether entry is included.
Two-day safari with accommodation US$490–900 / person Camping at the lower end, lodges at the upper end.
Hot-air balloon flight ≈ US$360–400 / person Sunrise flight with bush breakfast. Weather dependent.
In-park accommodation US$30–800 / night Campsites at the bottom, luxury tented camps at the top.

Prices are indicative and were last checked against public listings in 2026. Park fees are set by the Rwanda Development Board and can change without notice.

Booking an Akagera safari: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can you visit Akagera National Park without a tour?

Yes — self-drive is permitted and popular with residents. You need a high-clearance 4x4, you pay park entry and a vehicle fee at the gate, and a park guide is strongly recommended. For one or two international visitors without their own vehicle, an organised tour is usually simpler and no more expensive.

What is included in an Akagera day trip from Kigali?

Typically hotel pickup in Kigali, return road transport in a 4x4, a driver-guide, a full-day game drive and lunch. Park entry fees and the Lake Ihema boat safari are sometimes included and sometimes not — this is the detail worth checking twice before you book.

What time do Akagera day trips leave Kigali?

Usually between 5am and 6am. The drive is 2.5 hours and you want to be inside the park during the productive early-morning hours, so an early start is not optional. Expect to be back in Kigali between 7pm and 9pm.

Is Akagera safe?

Very. Rwanda has an excellent safety record for visitors, the park is professionally managed and patrolled, and licensed guides follow strict wildlife protocols. Standard safari rules apply: stay in the vehicle unless your guide says otherwise, and never approach animals on foot.

Can children go on an Akagera safari?

Yes, and Akagera is a good first safari for families — the drives are on decent tracks, the boat safari is short, and lodges have pools. Check individual tour listings for minimum-age rules, particularly for night drives and balloon flights.
