Where to stay in Akagera National Park

From a US$30 bush campsite to a lakeside tented camp — every realistic option for sleeping in and around Rwanda’s Big Five park, and how to choose between them.

Where you sleep is the most consequential decision you will make about an Akagera trip, and it is not really about comfort. It is about being inside the park at first light.

A day trip from Kigali means leaving at 5am, arriving at the gate around 8.30am and leaving by mid-afternoon — you miss both golden hours. Staying inside the park means you are on the plains at 6am, which is when the lions are still moving and the light is at its best. Everything else about accommodation is secondary to that.

Below we break Akagera accommodation into three zones — inside the park, on the park edge, and Kigali — and cover what each costs and who it suits.

The three places you can sleep

Each zone works for a different kind of trip. Pick the zone first, then the property.

Inside the park

The only option that gets you onto the plains at dawn, and the only one that lets you book a night game drive. Ranges from basic public campsites to genuinely luxurious tented camps.

  • Best for: anyone staying two or more days, photographers, families with time
  • Cost: US$30 per person camping to US$800+ per night at the luxury camps
  • Book well ahead — there are very few beds inside a park this size

On the park edge

Lodges and guesthouses just outside the gates around Kayonza, Rwinkwavu and Gatsibo. Cheaper than in-park camps, still close enough for an early start, and easier to book at short notice.

  • Best for: budget-conscious travellers, self-drivers, short-notice bookings
  • Cost: roughly US$60–200 per night
  • You still pay park entry each day you go in, so factor that into multi-day plans

In Kigali

Almost everyone spends a night in Kigali either side of a safari. The capital has the widest hotel choice in Rwanda, from hostels to five-star, and is 2.5 hours from the southern gate.

  • Best for: the night before an early departure and the night you fly out
  • Cost: roughly US$30–350 per night
  • Choose somewhere central or near the airport depending on your flight time

Ruzizi Tented Lodge

Ruzizi Tented Lodge

Inside the park · Lake Ihema Eco tented lodge $$$ · Upper mid-range

The park’s own tented lodge, run in support of Akagera’s conservation programme, sitting directly on the shore of Lake Ihema. Furnished tents on raised decks look straight out over the water, meals are served on a deck above the lake, and hippos graze around the camp at night. Solar-powered and deliberately low-impact. If you want one night inside Akagera and are not on a luxury budget, this is the one.

  • Directly on Lake Ihema
  • Meals on the lake deck
  • Hippos and birds from your tent
  • Supports park conservation
Mantis Akagera Game Lodge

Mantis Akagera Game Lodge

Inside the park · southern sector Full-service safari lodge $$ · Mid-range ⭐ 9.2/10

The largest property inside the park, set on a hill at Akagera’s southern end with long views over Lake Ihema. Around sixty rooms and suites, a big pool and pool deck, a restaurant, a bar and a conference centre. It is a hotel rather than a bush camp, which is exactly what some travellers want — reliable rooms, air conditioning, a pool for the middle of the day and no compromise on comfort.

  • Sixty rooms and suites
  • Pool overlooking Lake Ihema
  • Restaurant and bar on site
  • Good value for in-park comfort
Magashi Camp

Magashi Camp

Inside the park · northern sector Luxury tented camp $$$$ · Luxury

A handful of tents on a peninsula on Lake Rwanyakizinga in the far north of the park — the most exclusive address in Akagera and the one place that puts you in the middle of the best game-viewing country. Guided activities, boat trips and night drives run privately from camp. Expensive, remote and, by every account, extraordinary. Book direct or through a specialist operator well in advance.

  • Far northern sector, best game viewing
  • Very small — book months ahead
  • Private boat trips and night drives
  • Luxury pricing
Akagera Rhino Lodge

Akagera Rhino Lodge

Park edge · Kayonza Lodge & glamping $$ · Mid-range

A well-priced lodge close to the park with views towards Lake Ihema, offering a mix of rooms and luxury safari-tent glamping. A sensible middle option: significantly cheaper than staying inside the park, close enough for a genuinely early start, and comfortable enough that you are not roughing it.

  • Rooms and glamping tents
  • Views towards Lake Ihema
  • Good value near the southern gate
  • Easy early starts
Akagera Resort and Country Club

Akagera Resort and Country Club

Park edge · Gatsibo Resort hotel $$ · Mid-range

A resort-style property roughly 15 km from the park with an outdoor pool, sauna and fitness centre. More conventional hotel than safari lodge, and a good pick if you are travelling with people who want facilities and a pool as much as they want game drives.

  • Outdoor pool, sauna and gym
  • About 15 km from the park
  • Family-friendly facilities
  • Mid-range pricing
Akagera public campsites

Akagera public campsites

Inside the park Public campsites $ · Budget

Akagera runs three public campsites: Mutumba on the northern ridge, Shakani on the lake shore and Muyumbu in the south. All are unfenced and basic — no water, no power, no shop — and all are unforgettable. You bring everything, book in advance through park reception, and fall asleep to hyenas. Far and away the cheapest way to sleep inside the park.

  • Mutumba, Shakani and Muyumbu sites
  • Unfenced — follow the safety rules
  • Bring all water, food and fuel
  • Must be booked in advance
Kigali Serena Hotel

Kigali Serena Hotel

Kigali City hotel $$$ · Upper mid-range

A reliable central Kigali base for the night before an early safari departure, with an outdoor pool, spa and 24-hour room service — useful when your pickup is at 5am and your flight landed at midnight. Kigali has dozens of good options at every price point; this is simply a dependable, central default.

  • Central Kigali location
  • Outdoor pool and spa
  • 24-hour room service
  • Easy for very early pickups

Booking tips

  • Book in-park accommodation months ahead for July, August and December. There are only a few dozen beds inside a park of 1,122 km².
  • Check whether park entry is included in your room rate — at most properties it is not, and you pay it separately at the gate each day.
  • If you plan a night game drive, you must be staying inside or immediately beside the park. Confirm this before booking.
  • Park-edge lodges are typically half the price of in-park camps and only 20–40 minutes further from the gate — a good compromise on a tighter budget.
  • For Kigali, pick a hotel close to your pickup point rather than the cheapest: a 5am departure across the city is not a good start to the day.
  • Ask about mosquito nets and repellent. Akagera is at lower altitude than most of Rwanda and malaria precautions matter here.

Akagera accommodation FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can you stay inside Akagera National Park?

Yes. Options inside the park range from three basic public campsites through the park’s own Ruzizi Tented Lodge and the larger Akagera Game Lodge to the luxury Magashi Camp in the north. Beds are limited, so book well in advance.

How much does accommodation near Akagera cost?

Public campsites start at roughly US$30 per person per night. Park-edge lodges and guesthouses run about US$60–200. In-park lodges are typically US$150–400, and the luxury tented camps can exceed US$800 per night.

Do I need to stay overnight to visit Akagera?

No — a day trip from Kigali works and is what most visitors do. But staying overnight is the single biggest improvement you can make to an Akagera trip, because it puts you in the park at dawn and lets you reach the northern plains.

Is there wifi at Akagera lodges?

Most lodges and camps offer wifi in communal areas, though it can be slow. Mobile coverage inside the park is patchy and disappears entirely in parts of the north.
