Kigali

Rwanda’s calm, green capital — and your gateway to Akagera · Gateway

Kigali is not a place you pass through so much as a place that quietly changes your idea of what an African capital is like. It is spread across a series of steep green hills, it is strikingly clean — plastic bags are banned nationwide and the last Saturday of each month is a community clean-up day — and it consistently ranks among the safest cities on the continent for visitors.

It is also the practical hub of any Akagera trip. Kigali International Airport is 10–15 minutes from the city centre, virtually every safari operator picks up from Kigali hotels, and the road east to the park’s southern gate is smooth tarmac almost the whole way.

Build in at least one full day. The Kigali Genocide Memorial, where more than 250,000 victims are buried, is essential and sobering context for the country you are travelling in. Then spend the afternoon somewhere lighter — the coffee scene is genuinely good, the craft cooperatives at Caplaki and Nyamirambo are worth a browse, and the view from Mount Kigali is the best in the city.

Top things to do at Kigali

Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial

The memorial at Gisozi is the country’s central site of remembrance for the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Allow two hours, take the audio guide, and plan something gentle afterwards.

Take a city and market tour

Half-day guided tours cover Kimironko market, the craft cooperatives, Nyamirambo’s streets and the viewpoints — the fastest way to get a feel for the city.

Drink Rwandan coffee where it is grown

Rwanda produces outstanding washed arabica, and Kigali’s cafés serve it at its best. Several roasteries run tastings and cupping sessions.

See Rwanda from the air

Private scenic helicopter flights from Kigali take in the hills, the lakes and the national parks — expensive, but a spectacular way to understand the geography of the "land of a thousand hills".

How to get to Kigali

  • Kigali International Airport (KGL) is served by RwandAir, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, KLM, Brussels Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines and others.
  • Most nationalities can obtain a Rwandan visa on arrival, and the East Africa Tourist Visa covers Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya — check current requirements before you fly.
  • The southern gate of Akagera is about 110 km east, roughly 2.5 hours by road on good tarmac.
Insider tips
  • Ride-hailing apps and metered taxis both work well; motorbike taxis are cheap, ubiquitous and legally required to carry a spare helmet.
  • The Rwandan franc (RWF) is the local currency, but US dollars are widely accepted for tours and park fees. Cards work in hotels and better restaurants.
  • Do not photograph people without asking, and avoid photographing government or military buildings.
  • Plastic bags are illegal in Rwanda — they may be confiscated at the airport, so repack before you fly.
